Bonds in Washington State
Contractor, license, permit and performance bonds
Fast help with the bonds Washington contractors and businesses need to register, pull permits and win contracts.
A surety bond is a three-party guarantee: the surety company promises the obligee, such as the State of Washington or a project owner, that you will meet your obligations. Unlike insurance, if the surety pays a claim you are expected to repay it. Bond premiums are usually a small percentage of the bond amount and depend on credit and experience.
Bonds we help with
- Contractor registration bonds: $30,000 for general contractors and $15,000 for specialty contractors registered with L&I
- License and permit bonds: for city permits, right-of-way work and state licenses
- Bid, performance and payment bonds for public and private contracts
- Notary, title and other miscellaneous bonds
- Business service and janitorial bonds that protect your clients from employee theft
How to get bonded
For most license bonds, we need your business name exactly as registered, your UBI number, owner information and the bond type and amount. Many small bonds can be issued within a day or two. Contract bonds require more underwriting, including financial statements and work history.
Surety bond FAQ
Is a contractor bond the same as insurance?
No. The bond protects your customers and the state. General liability insurance protects your business from injury and damage claims. Washington contractors need both.
Can I get a bond with bad credit?
Often yes, at a higher rate. Some markets specialize in contractors with credit challenges.
